Coreógrafo principal y director del
Royal Ballet de Inglaterra. Después de crear ballets desde 1925 para el Ballet Club (
luego, Ballet Rambert), se incorporó en 1933 al Vic-Wells Ballet (posteriormente,
Royal Ballet), donde llegó a ser director de coreografía, ayudante de dirección (1953–63) y director (
1963–70). Todavía forman parte de su repertorio por lo menos 30 de sus obras, como
